What Is a Stock Screener?

A stock screener is a tool that filters stocks from the entire market based on criteria you define. Instead of manually researching thousands of stocks, you set parameters (price range, volume, market cap, etc.) and the screener instantly shows stocks that match.

Common Screening Criteria

• Price: Set minimum and maximum price (e.g., $5-$50 for mid-priced stocks).
• Volume: Minimum daily volume ensures the stock is liquid and tradeable.
• Market Cap: Filter by size — Mega (>$200B), Large ($10-200B), Mid ($2-10B), Small ($300M-2B), Micro (<$300M).
• Daily Change %: Find stocks up or down more than a certain percentage today.
• Sector: Focus on specific industries like Technology, Healthcare, or Energy.

Example Screening Strategies

Momentum Stocks

Filter for stocks up >5% today with volume above 1M shares. These are stocks with strong intraday momentum backed by high trading activity.

Large Cap Value

Set market cap to >$10B and look for stocks with lower daily change. Combined with P/E and dividend data on the stock page, this helps find established companies at reasonable prices.

Small Cap Breakouts

Filter for market cap $300M-$2B, price $5-$50, change >3%, and sort by volume. This finds smaller companies making significant moves on high volume.
